A Legacy of Restoration
A Legacy of Restoration
By Sarah Hilderbrand, Founder of Saunest Pittsburgh
The Matriarch. I have always believed that we are the sum of the women who came before us. My story begins with my mother—my best friend, the matriarch of our family, and the primary architect of my world. A nurse by profession and a free spirit by nature, she navigated the world of healing with a rare, holistic perspective long before it was a trend. She taught me to balance clinical precision with a deep trust in the earth's restorative power.
She has an eye for design like no other; she showed me that a space is only truly beautiful if it also serves as a sanctuary for the soul. It is her aesthetic intuition and her unwavering encouragement that gave me the courage to bridge my corporate grit with my healer’s heritage.
The Healer’s Roots. That heritage is anchored by my grandmother—a true Italian Stregha. She moved through the world with a quiet, ancient power, healing others through prayer, Catholic ritual, and the botanical wisdom of the apothecary. From her, I learned that wellness isn't just physical; it is a sacred practice of tending to the spirit. She is the reason our Ritual Bar exists—it is a modern tribute to her old-world alchemy.
The Artist’s Soul: A Legacy in Wood. I carry this strength forward alongside the "Old Soul" of my father. A man deeply rooted in his Native American heritage, he was a musician, a poet, and an artist who gifted me a wordless respect for the earth’s elements. It is no coincidence that I carried the maiden name Wood for thirty years; he taught me that there is music in the silence of the steam and poetry in the grain of the timber.
Although he passed unexpectedly four years ago, his rhythm remains the pulse of this company. I am committed to keeping his spirit alive by ensuring that Saunest is never just a product, but a living work of art.
The Battle & The Breakthrough. My passion for this isn’t just aesthetic; it’s survival. I’ve lived with an autoimmune deficiency my entire life, recently complicated by a diagnosis of a rare genetic mutation of CF. It cycles through my body, attacking my musculoskeletal and nervous systems. After navigating fifteen MRIs and specialized neurosurgery teams, the medical recommendation was clear: the daily practice of contrast therapy. I didn't just incorporate the ritual; I built my life around it. The difference was so transformative that I went from systemic illness to training for my first NPC bikini competition. I realized then that I wasn't just healing; I was thriving.
The Anchor. Through every scan, every late-night vision board, and every hurdle of building this business, my husband has been my steadfast anchor. His belief in my dreams and his quiet, relentless motivation provided the foundation I needed to turn a "calling" into a reality. He saw the vision when it was just a spark in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, and he has stood by me as we brought that "afterglow" home to Pittsburgh.
The Divine Appointment. I am a firm believer that God has a hand in every detail of our journey—that He doesn’t just cross our paths, He orders our steps. Stumbling upon the Saunest exhibit at the Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show just a month ago was one of those unmistakable moments of His orchestration. The moment I saw those sleek, beautiful saunas, I was instantly transported back to that spa day in Southern Quebec. It was the exact experience and ritual I had longed for since that trip—a dream I finally realized God was ready to plant here in my own city.
The connection went deeper than design. Meeting Kasper Kull, the CEO of Saunest, was a clear answer to a prayer. We clicked instantly, discovering that we have the same core values: faith, family, and a reverence for the craft. It was a divine nudge that it was finally time to bring this Nordic vision home.
I am building this legacy for my daughter, Lydia. I want her to grow up knowing that we don't just "get through" the day; we honor our bodies, we respect our roots, and we create spaces that allow us to heal.
Your Personal Sanctuary. At Saunest Pittsburgh, we are a design destination for the home. Our mission is to help you bring the ritual home—to integrate a permanent, authentic Nordic landmark of restoration into your own backyard.
I am truly blessed to share these Estonian masterpieces and our curated Ritual Bar with you. There is nothing else like this in the USA, and I can’t wait to help you design the sanctuary your body and soul deserve.
